EVLN: Japan EV Club 17th annual EV Festival heroes
SHIMOTSUMA, Ibaraki -- Twenty-seven electric vehicles converted from gas vehicles raced against each other for the most laps at the 17th annual EV Festival held here on Nov. 3.
At the event, which is hosted by the Japan EV Club and held at Tsukuba Circuit in the city of Shimotsuma, classical music is played in the background as the quiet electric vehicles compete. This year, 27 competing cars lapped around the circuit along to Beethoven's Symphony No. 3, known as the Eroica -- meaning "heroic" in Italian.
The cars braved hairpin turns and other challenging features of the 2-kilometer circuit, with Toyota Motor Hokkaido Inc.'s entry powered by 240-kilograms worth of lithium-ion batteries coming in first place for running 29 laps during the 59-minute symphony.
Japan EV Club head Tadashi Tateuchi commended the participants, saying: "The people in the Tohoku region (struck by the triple disasters of March 11) who are doing their best, and the people who participated in the race today are all heroes."
