Planning MG Kit Car (68 VW Bug) Conversion
Hi all!

I have a professionally built MG kit car that's been sitting in my carport for the last 10 years. (I won't bore you with the details.) Anyway, a friend of mine peaked my interest by sending me a link to e-volks.com and I've managed to talk my wife into letting me do the conversion. New tires were installed and the engine was pulled within days of that decision. Big Grin

So here's where I'm at...

* Your skill level with auto mechanics and fabrication

I've worked on cars in the past and have even replaced engines in a couple cars and have done a little internal engine work. I'm very mechanically inclined, am OK with simple electrical systems, but I quickly get lost once you start adding electronic components like capacitors, resistors, and the like.

I can do simple fabrication easy enough, but nothing that requires a lot of precision.

* The range you are hoping to get (how many miles/charge)

As much as I can afford, but this is the first thing I'll be compromising on. My round-trip to work each day is about 6 miles.

* What level of performance you are hoping to get

I want it to be capable of hitting 65 mph, preferably in less than a minute. Tongue

* How much money you are willing to put into your project

I have a (somewhat) strict budget of $7,500 for the entire project. I've already spent some of that on necessities like tires, brake components, and such (since the car has been sitting for 10 years.) Assume $6,500 for the conversion itself. That has to cover batteries, controller, charger, potbox, motor, gauges, everything!

* What parts you've already considered, if any.

I was looking at Kit #3 (120V kit) at e-volks.com. After reading some stuff on this forum, I'm leaning towards looking elsewhere. I'd still like an affordable kit that has most of what I need. Suggestions?

I'm also planning on sticking with PbA batteries for the initial conversion. Hopefully, in a few years when they need replacing, the alternatives will either be cheaper or I'll have more $$$ to spend. Smile

Thanks!
